Oculoplasty

Oculoplasty is corrective and reconstructive surgery around the eye, addressing eyelid abnormalities such as ectropion (outward turning eyelid) and ptosis (drooping eyelid). It also includes cosmetic procedures for eye area enhancement.



TREATMENT

Oculoplasty can be treated with medical management, laser therapy, or surgery, depending on the condition.

Indications of Oculoplasty Surgery

  • Blocked Tear Duct: Leads to watery eyes due to drainage issues.
  • Ptosis: Droopy eyelids, creating a sleepy appearance.
  • Entropion and Ectropion: Inverted or everted eyelids causing irritation and watering.
  • Graves’ Orbitopathy: Thyroid-related eye disease.
  • Proptosis: Bulging eyeball, often caused by growths or thyroid issues.

Types of Oculoplasty Surgeries

As the name suggests, it is a range of plastic surgeries that helps to rebuild the eye and the associated areas.

  • BLEPHAROPLASTY: Eye lift surgery, includes upper and lower eyelid correction.
  • ECTROPION and ENTRIOPION SURGERY: Corrects inverted or everted eyelids.
  • DACRYOCYSTECTOMY and DACRYOCYSTORHINOSTOMY: Surgery to repair tear duct drainage.
  • EVISCERATION SURGERY:: Removal of eye contents, leaving the sclera intact, for injured or infected eyes.
  • ENUCLEATION SURGERIES:Removal of the entire eye with reconstruction for cosmetic purposes.
  • PTOSIS SURGERY:: Corrects droopy eyelids.
  • ORBITAL SURGERY: Reshapes the eye socket and surrounding structures for cosmetic and functional improvement.

Orbit

The Orbit Clinic handles a wide range of referrals, including both common and rare orbital disorders, tumors, and infections. These conditions are managed through both conservative approaches (medical management, chemotherapy, radiation) and surgical intervention, with tissue samples sent for biopsy and histopathological analysis. The clinic also provides specialized care for patients with thyroid-related orbitopathy, in close collaboration with general physicians and endocrinologists, on a daily basis.

Lacrimal system and Orbit

Nasolacrimal duct obstructions are treated with probing, balloon dacryoplasty, and dacryocystorhinostomy procedures. The clinic also manages orbital pathologies, including trauma, with surgeries like orbitotomy, biopsy/excision, and orbital floor fracture repair. Foreign body removal is also performed.

Oculoplasty

The Oculoplasty treats a variety of eyelid disorders, including ptosis, entropion, ectropion, and eyelid tumors. Surgical corrections for congenital lid anomalies, trauma, and cosmetic surgeries like blepharoplasty, as well as botulinum toxin injections for facial dystonias, are also performed.

Ocular Oncology

The Ocular Oncology clinic diagnoses and manages adult and pediatric malignancies of the eyelids, ocular surface, orbit, and globe. Chemotherapy is provided for conditions like retinoblastoma and other ocular cancers, in consultation with oncologists. The clinic serves as a referral center.

Ring of Hope

The Ring of Hope Fund provides free treatment, rehabilitation, travel, and accommodation for patients with eye cancer, helping to reduce the financial burden of treatment. It also offers custom ocular prostheses and rehabilitation services for those who have lost their sight, including prosthetic eyes and facial prostheses.

Ocular Prosthesis

The Ocular Prosthetics Centre specializes in fitting custom artificial eyes for patients who have undergone eye removal or facial surgery due to injury, tumors, or infection. It offers high-quality, lifelike prosthetic eyes and silicone facial prostheses for those with exenterated sockets.

A unique department specializing in the science, art and craft of fabricating and fitting of custom artificial eyes, or commonly called “Fake Eye”. Oculoplastic, Orbital, and Reconstructive Surgery

For over 70 years, the Oculoplastic, Orbital, and Reconstructive Surgery Service at NYEE has been a center of excellence, treating conditions involving the eyelids, eye socket, tear duct system, and face.
