Indications of Oculoplasty Surgery
- Blocked Tear Duct: It is also known as the tear drainage problem. An annoying,
waterlogged eye can be an indication of a blocked tear duct.
- Ptosis: It is a condition of droopy eyelids that looks like sleepy eyes.
- Entropion and Ectropion: This indicates an inverted and everted condition of eyelids. It
can be caused by damage of tissues around our eyelids. It can lead to persistent watering and
irritation of eyes.
- Graves’ Orbitopathy: Also recognised as Thyroid Eye Disease (TED). People with
uncontrolled thyroid suffer from this disease.
- Proptosis: When eyeball bulges outside of the orbital socket. Causes may any growth in
the orbit such as: tumours, thyroid orbitopathy, pseudotumour etc.
- Note: If you are suffering from any of these conditions, then you must visit our
Types of Oculoplasty Surgeries
As the name suggests, it is a range of plastic
surgeries that helps to rebuild the eye and the associated areas.
- BLEPHAROPLASTY: Also known as Eye Lift surgery. There are two parts of the operation,
upper and lower blepharoplasty.
- ECTROPION and ENTRIOPION SURGERY: These types of surgeries are carried out to correct
the inverted or everted state of the eyelids. This repair is done when entropion or ectropion
causes corneal irritation (by eyelashes), constant epiphora (watering of eyes), severe pain and
- DACRYOCYSTECTOMY and DACRYOCYSTORHINOSTOMY: This process is also known as Lacrimal sac
surgery. This surgery helps to repair the drainage process of the eye to prevent excessive
watering and discharge.
- EVISCERATION SURGERY: Evisceration is an advanced surgery of the eye where the
intraocular contents of the eyes are removed by the surgeons keeping the white part (sclera)
untouched. This type of surgery is performed to decrease the pain of severely injured or
- ENUCLEATION SURGERIES: An advanced eye surgery. It involves the whole eye removal
followed by the reconstruction of the eye for better cosmesis.
- PTOSIS SURGERY:Plastic surgery that elevates your droopy eyelids.
- ORBITAL SURGERY: This type of surgery focuses on the re-formation of the eye. The eye
includes the eyelids, bones, sockets, forehead, eyebrows, etc. The oculoplasty surgeons widely
accept this surgery for the improvement of overall orbital deformity.

The Orbit Clinic receives a number of referrals encompassing both common and rare orbital disorders, tumours and infections. These are managed both conservatively (medical management/chemotherapy/ radiation) and surgically with tumour and the tissue being sent for biopsy and histopathological correlation. A large number of patients with thyroid related orbitopathy are also treated in collaboration with the general physician and endocrinologist on a daily basis.
Lacrimal system and Orbit
Nasolacrimal duct obstructions both congenital and acquired are routinely treated, with probing, balloon dacryoplasty, external/endonasal dacryocystorhinostomy and Conjunctivodacryocystorhinostomy with Jones’ tube placement. A number of patients with orbital pathology including orbital trauma are seen in the clinic. Orbitotomy with mass incisional/ excision biopsies and orbital floor fracture repair with implants (silicon, prolene mesh and osteopore) are commonly done. Orbital and wound exploration for foreign body and their removal are also expertly handled.
Orbit and Oculoplasty services are available at Aravind – Madurai, Chennai, Tirunelveli, Coimbatore, Pondicherry.
A number of patients are seen in the Oculoplasty clinic with a variety of eyelid disorders including malpositions (Ptosis, Entropion, Ectropion), benign and malignant eyelid tumours, facial dystonias etc. Congenital lid anomalies including lid coloboma, blepharophimosis, epiblepharon and euryblepharon are also surgically corrected. Surgical corrections for ptosis, entropion, ectropion, post traumatic lid tear / canalicular tear, eyelid reconstructions post tumour removal as well as number of cosmetic eyelid surgeries (e.g. Blepharoplasty) and injection of botulinum toxin (Botox) for facial dystonias and cosmetic indications are being performed.
Orbit and Oculoplasty services are available at Aravind – Madurai, Chennai, Tirunelveli, Coimbatore, Pondicherry.
Adult and paediatric malignancies of eyelids, ocular surface, orbit and globe are diagnosed and managed in the Oncology clinic. Chemotherapy is administered for the relatively common Retinoblastoma, and other rarer ocular and orbital cancers both primary and as adjuvant to surgery and radiotherapy. Chemotherapy sessions are administered at Aravind, in consultation with an oncologist. A trained nurse attends to the patients’ needs while an experienced medical officer stops by for regular check-ups. The clinic is now a referral centre.
Ocular Oncology service is available at Aravind – Madurai, Coimbatore and Tirunelveli.
Ring of Hope
Ring of Hope fund provides free treatment and rehabilitation to patients suffering from eye cancer. Cancer treatment which includes diagnosis, genetic testing, surgery, chemotherapy and radiation can be a catastrophic event for any family, burdening them with debt. Ring of Hope also pays for travel and accommodation so that those costs do not become an obstacle to continuing treatment.
In some cases, Aravind can save a patient’s life, but not sight. Orbital cancers can cause disfigurement and blindness, destroying self-esteem and limiting active participation in the community. Aravind’s team of expert ocularists created 250 custom prostheses for patients who had an eye removed – roughly half of them were provided free through the Ring of Hope. The Ring of Hope also provides rehabilitation services and devices for patients who have low vision or are blind.
Ocular Prosthesis is an artificial eye or aesthetic model of eyelids and globe which is fit for patients with phthisis bulbi or those whose eyes or orbital contents including globe have been surgically evacuated. During enucleation (surgical process of removing the eye), a silicone ball implant is inserted into the eye socket, to fill the area the eye once occupied. An ocular prosthesis is then moulded to fit in front of the implant. It occupies the space between the eyelids and the conjunctiva covering the implant. A silicone facial prosthesis is also fashioned in the department, for patients who undergo exenteration (removal of orbital contents long with the eyeball) for various oncological/ infective indications.
The Ocular Prosthesis Centre was established in 2004 and is equipped to cater to challenging cases with excellent results. It is now one of the leading centres in India for custom fitting of artificial eyes. Since inception, the centre has fulfilled the prosthetic requirement of over 10,220 satisfied patients. For patients with exenterated socket, silicone facial prosthesis is offered.
Ocular Prosthetics service is available at Aravind-Madurai only.

OCULAR PROSTHETICS DEPARTMENT
A unique department specializing in the science, art and craft of fabricating and fitting of custom artificial eyes, or commonly called “Fake Eye”. Loss or disfigurement of an eye due to an injury, eye tumour or an infection inside the eye or a shrunken eye can be devastating and it invariably affects your aesthetic beauty. Oculoplastic, Orbital, and Reconstructive Surgery
For more than 70 years, the Oculoplastic, Orbital, and Reconstructive Surgery Service has served as a center of excellence at New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai (NYEE). Our team members are among the most skilled specialists in the New York metropolitan area, with extensive experience treating a range of conditions involving the eyelids, eye socket, tear duct system, and face. Some of the procedures we do are medically corrective, some cosmetic, and others a combination of both, as in cases when we perform reconstructive as well as facial plastic surgery on a patient with a malignant tumor of the eyelid. Most procedures are done on an outpatient basis.
Through our status as a referral and teaching center, we are widely recognized for our ability to handle the most challenging cases, including orbital trauma and complex tumors. That capability is enhanced through our access to the full range of Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) specialists at NYEE, as well as to oncology, endocrinology, and other clinical departments at the Mount Sinai Health System. Our ability to understand the functional, reconstructive, and cosmetic relationships that exist between the eyes and the facial structures around them enables us to provide the safest and most appropriate treatments for our patient
Oculoplasty is the art and science of plastic surgery around the eye. The eyeball is a delicate structure, protected from harm by eyelids in front and the bony cup (socket) behind. Behind the eyeball run the nerves, arteries and muscles, which carry messages to the brain, move the eyeball, and provide nutrition to the eye. Oculoplasty deals with all these structures surrounding the eyeball.
Oculoplastic surgeons first train as ophthalmologists, when they learn in details about the eye. During further higher training, they start to handle plastic surgery. They have the best knowledge about the eye and its surrounding; as eye surgeons, they are also ready to handle the most delicate of structures. This combination of skills makes the oculoplastic surgeons the best to do plastic surgery around the eye.
Most advanced oculoplasty procedures are carried out at Bajaj Eye Care Centre such as
- Surgery for Ptosis (Correction of drooping Eyelids)
- Correction for Conginetal and Squired lid defects and anamolies
- Correction for Epicantlius, Entropion and Ectopion
- Blow out fractures
