Myopia control is treatment that slows how fast a child’s short-sight (minus power) increases. Glasses only help a child see clearly; they don’t stop the power rising. Myopia control uses options like low-dose atropine eye drops and special myopia-control lenses, plus more time outdoors, to slow that rise.

Why it matters

Myopia usually starts in school years and keeps rising until the late teens. The higher the final power, the higher the lifetime risk of retinal detachment, glaucoma and myopic macular damage. Slowing progression now lowers that risk later.

Myopia control options

Low-dose atropine eye drops

One drop at bedtime. Widely used to slow progression, with few side effects at low doses.

Myopia-control spectacle lenses

Specially designed lenses that correct vision and also send a signal to slow eye growth.

Specialty contact lenses

Options such as overnight orthokeratology or daytime myopia-control soft lenses, for suitable older children. Ask your doctor which options suit your child.

Daily habits

At least 1–2 hours outdoors a day, regular breaks from near work (the 20-20-20 rule), and good lighting for study.

What to expect

A full eye exam with dilating drops, eye-length measurement where needed, a plan suited to your child’s age and power, then reviews every 6 months to track progress.

Myopia control FAQs

Can myopia be cured or reversed?

No. Myopia control slows the increase; it does not remove the existing power. Laser correction is an option only in adulthood once power is stable.

At what age should myopia control start?

As soon as myopia is found and is increasing — usually between ages 6 and 14.

Will my child still need glasses?

Yes, for clear vision. Myopia control works alongside glasses or lenses.

Do too many screens cause myopia?

Long periods of close work, including screens, and too little time outdoors are linked to faster myopia progression in children.
