A comprehensive eye check-up tests far more than your glasses number. At Dr. Solanki Eye Hospital in Malleshwaram, it covers vision, eye pressure, the front of the eye and the retina, so problems like glaucoma, cataract and diabetic eye disease are caught before they affect your sight.
What the check-up includes
- Vision test for distance and near, with and without your current glasses
- Refraction to find your exact glasses power
- Eye pressure check, the key screening test for glaucoma
- Slit-lamp examination of the eyelids, cornea, iris and lens
- Dilated retina check to look at the optic nerve, macula and blood vessels
- Eye movement and alignment, especially for children
Depending on what the doctor finds, you may be advised further tests such as OCT scans, visual fields or corneal mapping.
How long does it take?
Plan for about 1 to 2 hours. Most of that is waiting for the dilating drops to work. The drops blur near vision and make you sensitive to light for 3 to 4 hours, so bring sunglasses and avoid driving yourself home.
Who should get one, and how often
- Adults under 40 with no eye problems: every 2 years
- Everyone over 40: once a year, as glaucoma and cataract become more common
- People with diabetes: a dilated retina check at least once a year
- Children: before starting school, then every year, or sooner if they squint, sit close to screens or complain of headaches
- Family history of glaucoma or high myopia: ask your doctor for a closer schedule
Signs you should not wait
Book a visit soon if you notice blurred or double vision, frequent headaches while reading, new floaters or flashes of light, eye pain or redness that does not settle, or difficulty seeing at night. Sudden loss of vision, a curtain over part of your sight, or a chemical injury needs same-day care.
What to bring
- Your current glasses or contact lenses (and the lens box or prescription)
- A list of medicines you take, including eye drops
- Previous eye reports, if any
- Sunglasses for after the dilation
Eye check-up FAQs
Should I book in advance?
Booking ahead cuts your waiting time. Call or WhatsApp us to pick a slot.
Can I wear contact lenses to the check-up?
Wear glasses on the day if you can. Some tests need your lenses out, and soft lenses can change the shape of the cornea slightly.
Is the eye pressure test painful?
No. A numbing drop is used and the test takes a few seconds.
Will I get my glasses prescription the same day?
Yes. You can order glasses at the in-house optical store before you leave.
